SPECPOL hosted many similar ideas on the issue of global landmines, but all the different blocs are still in the process of merging their ideas. The committee was off track for majority of the conference, with topics ranging from sending diseased dogs to identify the land mines, thus saving them from costly execution. These radical and improbable solutions prevented the committee from any useful debate and led to broad solutions with no clear way of execution.
Creation of an international task force
That being said, some delegates are working together to create an international task force, funded by the global community especially tasked with locating and disarming of landmine-infested zones. This proposal is still a work in progress, and facing major financial and judicial conflicts in countries. The financial aid is complete “sending direct monetary aid to countries without corruption, and sending physical aid to countries who are more prone to corruption”.
Education
Simultaneously, the bloc lead by Sweden is also promoting education in the landmine heavy zones in third world countries to protect the citizens while the task forces clears the fields and creates . The education effort will be complete with multilingual UN peacekeepers to “teach civilians on how to react when such tragedies do occur.” The peacekeepers will use the available technology to their full advantage, while also participating in hands on community educating. If the necessary technology, such as smartmines can be funded, blocs are also pushing to replace landmines with smartmines.
While all blocs are unanimous in their decision that an international funding campaign is absolutely necessary in terms of all solutions, the committee is still working out the details on how the funds will be evenly distributed for the maximum effects.
