The Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) reached an intense level of debate no less than 5 minutes into the session. Followed by UK’s speech, Germany brought up the issue of the child labour and slavery in Africa. Many western countries believe that it is important to have people supervise these companies. The western countries also believe that punishment from local government is necessary to ensure these children’s growth. “It’s shameful to see that it is 21st century and there is still slavery on this earth!” exclaimed the delegate of Spain.
Later into the debate, China brought up a new solution to the issue being discussed. China proposed
to send financial aid to these companies so that they not only stop using child labour, but also play a positive role and “even help [CRC] with the [child labour] issue.”
The delegate of China tried to find support from a variety of countries: “It is important to work with ‘big countries’ such as US for sure, but it is also important to cooperate with ‘small countries’ and even the companies.”
Another issue the delegates discussed was the methods to ensuring the proper education and life condition of children in poor families around Asia, Africa and South America.
“The reason for poor education among these children is that there is no school in these areas,” said Germany. Germany and its EU allies believe that increasing the financial assistance is necessary and it is the only way to improve these children’s status.
China later took the floor, “We believe our assistance to these countries should be in specific forms such as training school staffers and teachers.” China had a clearer and more specific procedure on improving the worldwide child labour issue. China’s speech was also more organized and significantly more substantive. “Investing in not only countries, but also companies is very important,” continued China.
Additionally, it was clear that China, UK, Germany and India were leading the committee during the five minutes unmoderated caucus.
