After Iraq initiated discussions regarding safeguards on migrant workers, International Labor Organization (ILO) shifted its focus to a new topic when Iceland brought up debates upon a tripartite system, which aims at promoting communications amongst the government, employers and worker representatives regarding the exploitation of migrant workers. While many countries urged that multiple perspectives should be valued in the system and voices from all three parties should be assessed equally, the debate has been repeating, not yet covered essential and specific solutions.
At the same time, certain countries have been active addressing their countries’ stances on migrant worker issues and bringing out new discussions. However, source countries of migrant workers are seemingly hesitant to voice their concerns. During discussions, host countries such as Iceland and Canada strongly urged source countries to participate in discussions regarding the economic impact of migrant workers on source countries and possible cooperation plans.
In response to other countries’ proposal that host countries should educate migrant workers, the UAE stressed the importance of educating employers in source countries.Plans of utilizing social medias as vital communication platform had been introduced, which was refuted by other delegates questioning whether migrant workers actually have access to or the habit of using social medias.
