The delegate of Russia took charge by speaking against the topic of the demilitarization of the Arctic. To quote the delegation of Russia “We must discuss the more pressing issue first, the proliferation of small arms, as it has already affected many of our citizens through terrorism.” The delegate also stated that they should focus on disarmament of these small weapons as it is more closely related to the committee explicitly saying to the delegates, this is not a climate change committee.
The delegation of Germany came back by “attacking” the delegate of Russia by saying that they don’t want to talk about Demilitarization of the arctic, because of their aggressiveness in the Arctic lands. The delegate of Germany stated “It is much more important to talk about this first because if we put this off, it will be too late.” The delegation also conveyed that there are already many things in place for the proliferation of small arms, that it would be redundant and a waste of time to talk about it now.
It came down to a narrow vote but the committee ended up discussing the demilitarization of the Arctic. In the committee, they first debated on international waters. The Russian Federation has stated that they have complete support of the Arctic being international waters, stating that it is something that all nations can have a middle ground of sharing the waters and trading through them. However the delegation of Russia did state that they strongly agree there being free passage of all military.
The DISEC committee decided to debate upon the resources in the Arctic next. The delegation of Zimbabwe discussed that it is important to monitor the resources in the Arctic, as there is a problem of overfishing in the Arctic that is causing lots of problems in the ecosystems. The delegate of Sweden on the other hand strongly believes that they should keep the resources out of it and support the trade routes within the Arctic instead. Many countries have been fighting for control over the Arctic due to its high abundance in resources. The delegate of China believes that the best way to solve this problem is having clear boundaries of countries so that they can stop fighting over what is theirs in the Arctic. As of this moment there is no clear consensus on who supports each other and it seems as if no one can really agree upon anything.
