In the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) committee, delegates are debating the topic of Government Corruption of ASEAN Member States. The majority of delegates strongly believe in an anti-corruption agency monitoring the countries in the ASEAN. However, the other side of the argument debates that the delegates must consider a much easier solution, which involves education and raising the pay of public police officers.
The delegation of Laos admitted to their corruption and proposed new ideas to help save their country from corruption such as the idea of a three point system stating that this is not an issue that can simply be solved by only two steps. The delegation of Thailand retaliated by saying “A three point system would simply be a waste of resources, it is much easier to raise the pay of our public officers so they are less likely to accept bribes.”
The committee then moved on and began debating on whether the committee should consider using the anti-corruption measures in Singapore for the other countries. The delegation of Thailand stated during their opening speech that they strongly believe that Singapore’s measures would benefit the vast majority of the committee. However. the delegation of Laos fought back saying “what might work for Singapore won’t necessarily work for everyone. There are countries in this committee that have nothing to be invested into by foreign investors. This system won’t work for us, and certainly won’t work for countries like the Philippines with high population either.”
Moreover, the committee continued to debate on the topic with the delegation of Indonesia taking charge. The delegation of Indonesia proposed that this is not a mandatory thing for all countries to do, but if a country were to benefit from it they recommended following the Singapore measures.
As of this moment the ASEAN is working finding solutions for the other countries that wouldn’t benefit from following the Singapore measure. The ASEAN is working steadily on finding a solution that the committee can agree upon as a whole. The committee is currently discussing ideas on how they can improve each other’s economy through foreign investment.
