Sheraton - The United Nations Industrial Development Organization is currently faced with the
estimate of more than 40% of new businesses failing and a likely discontinuation of business after 3-4 years. Due to this discontinuation, the small and medium enterprises (SME) will suffer heavily.
SME comprises of a large number of firms, but the development of these firms currently rely on a fragile system, as each faces its own set of problems. Small firms lack experience and have fluctuating revenue, while medium enterprises have to deal with a lack of sufficient funds to sustain and grow. However, another
problematic factor that faces these firms, both small and medium, is their inability to access basic
amenities like running water, electricities, etc..
The members of UNIDO are currently drafting a working paper in order to reach a resolution.
However, the room is split into two stances. Delegates are getting frustrated by the fact that, even
though they are working towards the same goal, countries are not working in union.
France and supporters believe that education should be the top priority in order for the future of
African economies to thrive. France states, "We want to invest in the people, not the corporation."
They feel that Russia, China along with the support from bigger nations are dominating the
conference, not seeing the true value in education and how it can lead to the development of
economies in developing nations. As their priority is education, it upsets the group when the opposing
group overlooks it.
On the other hand, Russia and supporters state, "we believe in the importance of establishing
industry in African nations with untapped natural resources. However, as per the UNIDO mandates,
we must do this in a way that promotes long term benefits to African GDPs as well as protecting the
environment. Though aid and education are important to reducing disparities, it is not the route that
UNIDO will be focusing on." Russia wishes to combine the two working papers on the table, however,
France stands against this.
The delegation of Nigeria stands out, giving a clear voice for African countries leading the session.
"We want to see things happen in our time; to help the people at present time. We need to help the
that are crying out for help and the ones that will be crying out for help." Currently, Nigeria is on
Russia's stance, supporting the establishment of industries in African countries with untapped natural
resources.
