Currently, overpopulation is a large threat to the world in more ways than one. One might say the having a lot of people is good because that means more manpower in one country, however, what many people don’t realize is that some countries cannot provide enough food, water, and other basic essentials for their overpopulated country. The consequences of overpopulation are that there is a limit in many resources, for example, there is a shortage of oil, water, food, and other fossil fuels. This crisis requires a lot of international attention as many of these countries that are suffering from overpopulation don’t have the capability to solve the problem themselves. Many countries are thinking about population policies while some are thinking about saving up on food and water. Another large effect of overpopulation is that there is mass deforestation because a large amount of wood is taken for housing and farmlands. Not only that but due to the loss of trees there is a sudden rise in lumber prices. Due to the high demand of many materials used for daily necessities, countries have to resort to fracking which causes a lot of pollution and it may also cause earthquakes. Scientists such as Edward O. Wilson of Harvard University estimate that the maximum carrying capacity of the Earth is around 10 billion people; seeing that the current global population is around 7.5 billion people, humans are dangerously close to that threshold.
Many countries seem to believe that food waste is a very large side effect that needs to be solved. Israel and several other countries proposed the fact that there is a lack of food because too many people are wasting it. Only a small percentage of food produced is consumed. Spain and the United Kingdom believed that education is required to teach about how to not waste food and teach them different methods to save. Germany has seemed to realize that the problem mainly comes from western developed countries. Right now smaller countries are suffering from food scarcity so Germany wanted to strongly encouraged international trade agreements. India later then brought up the point that many don’t care about food waste because India has suffered from food scarcity. The nation does not have clean water either.
There were many different stances from different bloc positions. Germany had no coercive government policies and they believe that education and gender equality is important to solve overpopulation. The United States of America would like use least invasive way to curtail overpopulation, protect the environment, and halt overpopulation. The United Kingdom believed that economic growth is needed. China thought that population policies are needed in order to curtail overpopulation. The nation believed that these policies should be tailored to each country. They also believe that education is essential. Romania did not think that overpopulation is a problem. Ukraine strongly recommended NGOs to be placed to oversee developed and developing nations.
