The smuggling and production of drugs in Mexico has been a major issue for many decades with the first instance recorded in near the 1800s. Smuggling drugs such as cocaine into neighboring countries such as the United States has an annual profit in the billions. Since recent times, the drug cartels in Mexico produces 90% of all drugs that are used in the U.S.
Due to the revenue made from this illegal market, the drug cartels can pay off high officials of the U.S and Mexico to ignore this illegal activity. Corruption is deeply rooted in the government of Mexico which allows for the drug cartels to operate as they please with little resistance, in certain times, the government has even been known to assist in the exportation of cocaine to its chaotic trading partner, the U.S of A.
The Mexican government operates without transparency and hides many secrets from the eyes of the world. Due to this, no hard evidence can be found to properly link the government with the drug cartels; no punishments can be subjected to Mexico or its corrupt officials.
However, while the drug cartels can typically act freely, there have been attempts to remove the drug business from Mexico. Task forces from the Mexican military and the U.N have been implemented to try and curb the exportation and production of drugs. The efforts to halt the drug cartels have not been successful; offensive and violent drug cartel groups have been on the rise. There have also been more frequent appearances of vigilantes whose purpose seems to be to dispose of their local drug cartels, these appearances have resulted in many incidents between the groups producing many casualties in the process.
This entire situation could be easily avoided if the USA would exert more authority over its land and people. The drugs easily flow through the American border as if there wasn’t a border there at all; no difference would be made even if Trump’s purposed 55 feet wall were only 55 cm instead. The United States boasts of their military strength and being a world police but it seems that they are not even able to control the affairs inside their own country. Their inability to solve this elementary issue is truly disappointing.
UNSC committee, on the other hand, seems to have reached a consensus on the topic. A resolution paper has been created to manage the cartels as well as the corruption rooted in Mexico. They have decided to implement community level action for the improvement of social and economic infrastructure to educate the population of Mexico, to regularly hold meetings to review the actions of drug cartel activities, and to support the Mexican justice system.
